Health Care
The Chiefdom being in a hard to reach place faces a lot of challenges related to health. A number of the subjects die from common preventable diseases like malaria, cholera, diarehea, pneumonia, etc due to non-availability of a nearby good hospital. The available hospitals are 30 miles (48 kms) away either in Nyapea, Arua or Kuluva hospitals. However, lack of reliable means of transportation makes it difficult for patients to access these hospitals not to talk about lack of resources to pay for the transportation (if available) and the medical bills. Plague continues to remain a challenge in the Chiefdom as well due to the way of life of the people whereby they sleep in the same house with their produce to avoid theft. Produce such as maize, groundnuts etc attract rats in the houses.
The Chiefdom is working with the community to train them on health and sanitation by encouraging each homestead to have a pit latrine, always clean areas around their compounds, to wash their hands after using the latrine, drink water from boreholes or protected spring, eat well cooked food etc. The Chiefdom hopes if its project of building silos and food storage were to succeed, one of the health challenges would be addressed as the subjects will no longer be sleeping with their produce in their houses.
To promote good health, the Chiefdom plans to start a football club to be known as Kaal Ayuveni FC. The game of football is so popular among youths in Uganda Apart from promoting good health, the game will be used as a forum for instilling discipline and overcome idleness among the youths.
The Chiefdom plans to construct a first stop Clinic where its subjects can on a daily basis go for check ups with the possibility of referral to the bigger hospitals of Arua, Kuluva or Nyapea. With support of donors, friends and well wishers, the Chiefdom plans to acquire a Community Ambulance to be managed by the Chiefdom for conveying sick patients to the hospitals. The Chiefdom is also exploring the possibility to twin up with some hospitals in Kampala on their outreach programme to communities as part of their social responsibilities towards the poor segment of the Ugandan Community. This programme aims at such a hospital sending once a month to the Chiefdom a team of doctors to carry out immunization, health education and treat the locals for between three to five days. It is also expected that support of medicine would be received from such a hospital to the Chiefdom’s Clinic. These plans can only be achieved with the support of donors, government, Embassies, friends and well wishers of the Chiefdom including the daughters and sons of the Chiefdom in the diaspora.
